How James H. Brown and Associates Became Alberta’s Injury Lawyers

Since 1993, James H. Brown and Associates has built its reputation on standing up for Albertans’ rights, helping them achieve justice, closure, and compensation for their damages. Today, our law firm boasts over 200 years of combined experience and a proven record of success having achieved some of the largest multi-million dollar injury settlements ever achieved in Alberta.

The journey to becoming one of Western Canada’s leading injury law firms is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of our amazing team. Difficulties faced throughout our early years only served to strengthen our resolve and commitment to fight for the rights of every one of our injured clients to receive a fair and just settlement for their injuries. Read on to learn more about our history, as well as how James H. Brown and Associates help our clients achieve justice.

A Championship History

Our award-winning law firm is led by two generations of Edmonton sports champions. Founder James H. Brown was a member of the 1963 Memorial Cup Champion Edmonton Oil Kings, playing alongside future Hockey Hall of Famers Pat Quinn and Glen Sather. As one of the youngest members of the Oil Kings’ championship team, James H. Brown learned early about the commitment, work ethic, and resilience required to win, both on and off the ice. James H. Brown was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1963 Edmonton Oil Kings hockey team in 2011.

At age 19, however, James H. Brown’s dreams of joining the National Hockey League came to a sudden halt. On his way home from practice, Brown was hit in a head-on collision with a drunk driver, suffering a broken neck in the process. Though he tried to return to the ice, ongoing issues ultimately led to Brown undergoing career-ending spinal fusion surgery.

Brown’s struggle back to health taught him firsthand about the physical, mental, and emotional hardships endured by accident victims. This experience eventually led to Brown’s motivation and commitment to assist others dealing with the medical and legal hurdles encountered as a result of life-changing injuries suffered in a tragic accident.

“When I was injured, there wasn’t much out there for support,” says Brown. “Today, we are dedicated to giving seriously injured people the support they need.”

Two Generations of Champions

Trent Brown, like his father, was also a gifted athlete, becoming a standout defensive back for the U of A Golden Bears and Edmonton’s storied CFL franchise, the Edmonton Eskimos. Throughout his 9-year career, Brown captured the 1993 Grey Cup, as well as 4 All-Start selections. While on the Eskimos, Trent became an active member of the community, becoming the honorary spokesman for Edmonton’s Boys and Girls Clubs. He also supported the Eskimos Stay in School Initiative, the Ronald McDonald House, United Way, the Carnival of Champions, Alex Taylor Community School, DARE, and Kids with Cancer throughout his career.

Trent Brown’s athletic career, like his father’s, ended prematurely due to serious injuries. Numerous concussions and a previously-undiagnosed skull fracture forced his retirement in 1999. At his father’s suggestion, Trent returned to university to study law, eventually becoming a partner at James H. Brown and Associates. Trent’s experience with life-altering injuries underpins his personal commitment to assisting people who suffer debilitating injuries in tragic accidents. Trent’s popularity in the community has been invaluable in helping the firm build a comprehensive support network to support seriously injured clients during their recovery.
