James H. Brown & Associates is investigating a class action on behalf of those who have been affected by the salmonella outbreak from the contaminated cantaloupes. If you or a loved one have been affected, contact us today to ensure you understand your options.
Malichita and Ruby brand cantaloupes have been identified as the likely source of the salmonella outbreak. Food recall warnings were issued on November 1, 14 and 17, 2023 for Malichita brand cantaloupes sold between October 11 and November 14, 2023. The food recall warning was updated on November 24, 2023 to include Ruby brand cantaloupes sold between October 10 and November 24, 2023. Honeydew, pineapple, watermelon and assorted fruit trays were subsequently recalled as a precaution. More information on the recall can be found here: https://recalls-rappels.canada.ca/en/alert-recall/malichita-brand-and-rudy-brand-cantaloupes-recalled-due-salmonella
Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec are among the provinces in which the recalled products were distributed. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating a similar salmonella outbreak.
Symptoms of exposure to Salmonella, which often start within 6 to 72 hours, include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps and headaches, and typically last 4 to 7 days. If you are experiencing symptoms, contact your health care provider immediately, especially if you are at higher risk for serious illness. Young children, older adults and those with weakened immune systems, are most susceptible to the illness. Multiple cases have been reported in long-term care homes and daycares.
The Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating the outbreak and issued a further update on December 7, 2023, which can be found here: https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/public-health-notices/2023/outbreak-salmonella-infections-malichita-cantaloupes.html. More than 130 people have become ill and 5 deaths have been linked to the outbreak.
